Tater is learning about food groups in school. They are also looking at sugar content, fat content and the like. It brought to mind one of my favorite food groups… Dinner! And one of my favorites that my mom always makes when I’m around is fried pork chops, rice, gravy, blackeyed or pinkeyed peas, and cornbread. My mouth is watering as I think about this. In fact, I remember asking my mom for her cornbread recipe… and laughed when she told me which box brand she preferred. Yep… so that means if I ever decide to make a cornbread dressing for Thanksgiving… I’ll most likely be starting out with cornbread out of a box mix. Hmmmm… fried pork chops… haven’t had those since mom left. Might need to put that on my list for next week.

Warning food groups have changed since we learned them. I was helping one of the boys with a crossword puzzles and the clue was “number of food groups”. It had four letters. This is easy. Four food groups. Wrong. The answer was Five. It seems oils and fats was added at some point. That is not a food group. (That was many years ago, they have probably changed it again.) If they want to add one they should consider Chocolate a food group all by itself.
