Money, money and kids with money

I have started a new program at home. The boys are getting an allowance. I have been debating how much. I started with a $1… but they are getting $3 for ‘good behavior’… so I might see about up’ing it to $2. With every dollar they get to put 70cents in the ‘spend’ jar, 20 cents in the ‘save for future’ jar and 10 cents in the ‘charity’ jar. They are working towards some nerf guns that they want. It helps.

One of the reasons this has become an issue is that I have been working hard to cut back on our expenses. I have been looking for cheap auto insurance, though I haven’t found any cheaper than what I have already. My hubby agreed last year to get rid of the extra sports channels on cable. I have the cheapest internet connection. Yep, I never stop looking but I realized that the boys really don’t get to see what we do with the money. I thought it best if they learned it for themselves. No new toys unless they buy it or it is a holiday. We’ll see how it goes.

    I don’t think that there is any CHEAP auto insurance in Florida. I have been with State Farm since 1977. State Farm costs vary according to the area..even within the state. My costs tripled when I moved back to Florida but went down some when I moved to Citrus county.

    But the good thing about State Farm is that if you get in with them and stay with them they don’t raise the premium every year as most companies do…unless you get a lot of tickets or have a lot of accidents.

    Nerf guns rock!
    The double bonus of making/letting them buy their own Nerf guns and darts is:
    a) they will be more careful about abusing the darts because if the darts break, they’ll have to buy more, and
    b) they will be better at picking up their darts because if they lose them, they’ll have to buy more.

    Nerf and allowance. They go together.

    GuyK: I agree. I hate to switch because I have been with my company for so long that I would lose out going elsewhere… not that I like them but they haven’t been bad in general.

    Roses: Ohhhh I had not thought about the darts! Great idea!
