Here is something easy and a little different you can do for Valentines with your kids… make fans! I got this out of a book my mom bought the kids. I didn’t do it exactly like they suggested because I didn’t have everything they had. Besides I wanted my kids to use paper to make their own design. What I didn’t realize was that I should have used regular paper and not card stock. The card stock was too stiff and made gluing it down and keeping it glued down difficult. The book suggested using christmas paper with pretty flowers or snowflakes on it. NOT.
You need Popsicle sticks (about 6 per fan), paper, glue, scissors, stuff to decorate the fan! If you want a cool ‘tail’ for the fan, you can get some string and beads to make a tail for it.
Here is a sample of the finished product (side 1):
Now side 2:
While the kids were playing, I glued the sticks together and used a piece of paper to make a… my mind went blank… fan outline that I would use to draw on the paper for the kids. I folded their paper in half and in the middle of it, I put the fan shape and drew around it. They got to cut out the pieces and decorate one side of each piece of paper. After they were done, I glued the pieces on to their fan popcicle sticks… and they worked on the beads on the strings. The next morning I assembled everything. I had some extra gluing to do that night to make sure the paper stuck to the sticks. Which is why regular paper would have been better for this project! Still, put hearts on it or some cool Valentine decoration and it would make a much more fun gift than just a card!

another cool keepsake to make and give for valentine’s day is a “Hug”. Trace their hands and then attach them to the end of crape paper that has been measured out the length of their arms from hand to hand.
I have one from one of my boys and it amazes me how little he was. But, I will always have one of his little boy hugs.
what a cool idea!!! thanks!
OK, I’m feeling like a totally woefully inadequate Mom. Please tell me you did not take the time to make these for every kid in the class???
hahaha. No I did not make one for every child in the class… though I had all the stuff I could have done it.
