One of the things I like about Tot’s preschool is they are willing to have the parents involved. In fact, they have let me come and make volcanoes… and now they let me come and light candles on fire. It was a blast!
We had a discussion how fire needs oxygen to stay going… and then we talked about the glasses I had and guessed which candle’s fire would go out first… the big glass, the little glass or the one with no glass. Then we gave it a try!
Afterwards, I had bowls with water which blue dye had been put in it. We put the glass over the top and watched the water get sucked up into the glass… it was cool… you can’t see the end result in this picture, but you can see how we started:
Yep… I have fun with science and I’m glad they let me show it to the kids. I had 2 other parents there to help out as well. Very awesome! The teacher also used it to talk about the ‘fire training’ they had… and how running while on fire would give the fire more oxygen and make a bigger fire which is why you should ‘stop drop and roll’.

Very Cool. Sounds like everyone had a great time.
Well, the title scared me awake, but that’s really very cool! And teaching them what to do in case of a fire is invaluable!
Yay, school!
Phew, you had me worried there for a minute. I’ll have a dig around if you like and see what I might have that could be useful if you are teaching fire safety and awareness.
