This little map turtle is living in a small pond in a strip mall in Broward county. Well, sort of a strip mall. There’s an office building there as well, closer to the street. Only in Florida!

He was cute, but as soon as I snapped the picture he lit out for deeper water…

Here is something easy and a little different you can do for Valentines with your kids… make fans! I got this out of a book my mom bought the kids. I didn’t do it exactly like they suggested because I didn’t have everything they had. Besides I wanted my kids to use paper to make their own design. What I didn’t realize was that I should have used regular paper and not card stock. The card stock was too stiff and made gluing it down and keeping it glued down difficult. The book suggested using christmas paper with pretty flowers or snowflakes on it. NOT.
You need Popsicle sticks (about 6 per fan), paper, glue, scissors, stuff to decorate the fan! If you want a cool ‘tail’ for the fan, you can get some string and beads to make a tail for it.
Here is a sample of the finished product (side 1):

Now side 2:

While the kids were playing, I glued the sticks together and used a piece of paper to make a… my mind went blank… fan outline that I would use to draw on the paper for the kids. I folded their paper in half and in the middle of it, I put the fan shape and drew around it. They got to cut out the pieces and decorate one side of each piece of paper. After they were done, I glued the pieces on to their fan popcicle sticks… and they worked on the beads on the strings. The next morning I assembled everything. I had some extra gluing to do that night to make sure the paper stuck to the sticks. Which is why regular paper would have been better for this project! Still, put hearts on it or some cool Valentine decoration and it would make a much more fun gift than just a card!

I have been reading my comments and thinking how lucky I was out shopping. It was very civil… everyone said please, excuse me, and the like. It was crowded but not overly crazy. I got what I wanted and a little bit more. In fact, I bought some Shrinky Dink paper. They didn’t have the kits available. Which is sad, until I saw this contest over at Three P’s in a Pod… The give away is for the Shrinky Dinks Holiday Fun set. This is being given away by Creativity for Kids(Faber-Castell).
I would like to win this and there are a couple of ways to get your name in the random pot to be drawn… leave a comment over at Three P’s in a Pod and if you blog about it with links, you get 5 extra entries!!!! yaa… I’m blogging here…
There are a lot more prizes over there… don’t be surprised to see more posts like this!
